Big Daddy Stephenson Riding High among UFC Lightweights

Joe Stephenson appears set for a lightweight championship title shot, perhaps as early as December 2007. The grappling ace and former winner of The Ultimate Fighter (albeit at a higher weight class) has impressed Octagon observers with newly improved striking to go along with his world-class grappling game.

Most recently, Stephenson out-Jiu-Jitsu'd the very game Liugi Fiorivanti in a back-and-forth affair that saw Stephenson on the wrong end of Liugi's fast hands and powerful wrestling attack on more than one occasion. Big Daddy, though, gamely fought through until he could overwhelm Liugi with his BJJ game and some serious ground-and-pound action.

For now, though, it seems like Stephenson will be forced to wait for the California State Athletic Commission to hear UFC Lightweight Champ Sean Sherk's October appeal appeal of his positive test for steroids following his successful title defense against Hermes Franca, who also tested positive for steroids, and subsequently confessed to taking the banned substances.
